The Basics: Simple Syrup

Hello friends!

For my last post in my Basics Series, I wanted to share a SUPER easy recipe that will help you make awesome cocktails and delicious iced coffee: Simple Syrup.

I was inspired to share this after visiting my mom one weekend. She just got back from Mexico and was ready to make enchiladas and margaritas for dinner. I was surprised to learn that my mom (an amazing cook and lover of all healthy things) was about to buy a margarita mix from the store! I quickly explained that Elliot had found the perfect way to make a margarita at home with only 3 ingredients. She was so thankful she hadn’t gotten the mix (which probably had corn syrup or other sweeteners) and she was very pleased with the outcome.

So, to start, here’s the easiest recipe / kitchen skill ever…

Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1 Part Water
  • 1 Part Sugar

That’s seriously it.

Recipe:

1. All you need to do is add equal parts water and sugar to a small pot on low heat.

I did 1/2 cup of each.

2. Stir until fully combined.

3. Let cool to make delicious drinks!

While this simple syrup is great for iced coffee and many cocktails, here’s my favorite!

The Basic Margarita

I personally like to have my margarita on the rocks, but you could blend all of these ingredients and make a great frozen margarita too! You could definitely play around with the flavors and add some other fruit too. Or even some spicy jalapeños!

Recipe:

1. Start by adding some sugar and/or salt to a small plate. Then, take a small wedge of lime and slide it along the edge of your glass. Dip the edge in the salt or sugar to coat it. (I actually forgot to do this at first so I don’t have a picture of it!)

2. Next add ice to your glass.

3. Add in equal parts tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, and simple syrup. I also add a little water to make the drink less intense.

4. Stir ingredients and add a fun garnish!

Other recipes recommend a 3, 2, 1 method: 3 parts tequila, 2 parts lime juice, and 1 part simple syrup. Do what works for you! I’ve been obsessed with this recipe every since Elliot and I first made it.
